WE ARE IN UNAMA'KI

FIRST CONTACT WITH THE TEAM OF PARKS CANADA AND WITH CAPE BRETON UNIVERSITY (CBU)

Presented on behalf of Amets Aranguren, Marta Vazquez and Mirari Loyarte.

Two weeks ago we were flying out of the Basque Country.  These have been two weeks of meeting new people, and in which we have established ourselves in our little cabin in the town of Louisbourg.

After receiving an intense training with the team of Parks Canada, we have started to play our roles as Basques in the Historic Site of the Fortress of Louisbourg.

Mirari y Amets. Amets, would be responsible for firing the cannon later.

At the same time, we have started our course -inside the same project of JAUZARREA, UNAMA’KI-LOUISBOURG- with Cape Breton University (CBU).

The content of our course at the CBU is about the Mi’kmaq culture in the territory of Unama’ki. It is a very interesting course in which topics such as the relation between Basque people and Mi’kmaw people are covered. Moreover, fieldtrips are included, which have the objective of presenting in a practical way what we have learned in class. For example, on July 3rd we visited Membertou Heritage Park (Membertou First Nation), to which we will return on other days.
